Ms. Van Uum is the senior officer for public affairs and economic development at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. In this role, which she has held since 1983, Ms. Van Uum has led the university's efforts to more than double its acreage and add new facilities including the Touhill Center for Performing Arts, the Clay Center for Molecular Electronics, Computer Center Building and the Science Research Building. In addition to campus facilities, Ms. Van Uum was instrumental in securing the funding for reconstruction of Natural Bridge Great Street, I-70 and the placement of three MetroLink stations at the university.
Prior to her work at UMSL, Ms. Van Umm worked with the Congress for Racial Equality, the National Women's Political Caucus in Missouri (which she helped form), the Equal Rights Amendment Coalition in Missouri (first Executive Director), and served as Missouri's first female professional lobbyist.
Ms. Van Uum was the first woman elected to the St. Louis County Council and chaired the Council's Justice, Health and Welfare committee.
